Trait information

Trait: Hariness of leaf sheath

Barley leaf sheaths show variation for the absence or presence (from very few to many) of short hairs on the leaf sheaths.  A Mendelian genetic locus controlling this trait has been identified on chromosmoe 4H, termed HSH, with dominant alleles confering the presence of hairs.

This triat is scored during national varietal registration trials, as described by UPOV guidelines: "Lower leaves: hairiness of leaf sheaths" (UPOV character 2. Scores: 1 = absent; 2 = present).
